Reference rates come from the Frankfurter public API (central bank data). Only the request for rates is sent; the amounts you type stay in your browser.
How this is calculated
A conversion multiplies the amount by the exchange rate. These are the formulas used:
- Converted amount
- A × r
- Amount after a fee
- A × r × (1 − f ÷ 100)
- Rate between two currencies
- r(to) ÷ r(from)
A is the amount, r is the exchange rate (how much of the target currency one unit of the source currency buys), f is the fee in percent, and r(from) and r(to) are each currency's rate against the US dollar.
Reference rates are mid-market rates published by central banks and other official sources, collected by the Frankfurter API. They are not live trading prices and can be hours or days behind the market. Banks and exchanges add a margin, so you receive less than the reference rate suggests.
The converted amount is rounded to 2 decimal places, then the fee is taken from it, so the converted amount minus the fee equals the amount after the fee exactly.
Worked example
Converting $1,000.00 at an example rate of 1 USD = 280 PKR gives PKR 280,000.00. If the bank takes 2%, the fee is PKR 5,600.00 and you receive PKR 274,400.00. The rate is only an illustration, not today's rate.
Currency questions
How do I convert one currency to another?
Multiply the amount by the exchange rate. At 1 USD = 280 PKR, 1,000 USD is 280,000 PKR. To go the other way, divide by the rate.
Why is my bank's rate different from this one?
Banks and money-transfer services add a margin to the reference rate and sometimes a fixed fee. Enter that margin in the fee box, or type the rate your bank quotes, to see what you would actually receive.
Where do the rates come from and how current are they?
They are reference rates published by central banks and other official sources and collected by the Frankfurter API. They are not live trading prices, so they can be hours or days behind the market. The date is shown next to the result.
What if the rates do not load?
Type your own rate in the rate box. The calculator works the same way with any rate you enter.
Is my information stored or sent anywhere?
Your amounts are not sent anywhere or saved. The only request that leaves your browser is the one for the rates, which goes to the Frankfurter service and, like any website you visit, can see your IP address.
