How this is calculated

Your take-home pay is your gross pay minus the deductions. These are the formulas used:

Take-home pay
G − G × (t + o) ÷ 100 − F
Gross pay needed for a take-home pay
(N + F) ÷ (1 − (t + o) ÷ 100)
Net per year
N × 12 · N × 1
Net per hour
N(year) ÷ 52 ÷ H

G is the gross pay, N is the take-home pay, t is the tax rate in percent, o is the rate of other deductions in percent, F is the fixed deductions and H is the hours worked per week. All amounts are for the pay period you choose; a monthly amount is multiplied by 12 for the year, and a year is split into 52 weeks.

This calculator does not know any country's tax rules. It uses the single tax rate you enter. Many countries tax income in bands, so the share paid rises with income: take your effective rate from a payslip or an accountant, or use your tax authority's own tool for exact figures.

Each deduction is rounded to 2 decimal places, so the figures shown add up. The gross pay needed is rounded up to the next cent so the wanted take-home pay is reached.

Worked example

A gross pay of $3,000.00 a month with 12% income tax, 5% other deductions and $100.00 of fixed deductions leaves $2,390.00 a month, which is $28,680.00 a year. At 40 hours a week that is about $13.79 an hour.

Salary questions

How do I calculate net salary from gross salary?

Subtract the income tax and the other deductions from the gross pay. Tax is the gross pay times the tax rate ÷ 100. For example, 3,000 less 12% tax (360), 5% pension (150) and 100 of insurance leaves 2,390.

What is the difference between gross and net pay?

Gross pay is what your employer agrees to pay before anything is taken off. Net pay, or take-home pay, is what reaches your account after tax and other deductions.

Which tax rate should I enter?

Use your effective rate: the total tax you pay divided by your gross pay. Many countries tax income in bands, so this is lower than the top rate. A payslip or an accountant can give you the figure.

How is the hourly figure worked out?

The net pay for the year is divided by 52 weeks and then by the hours you work each week. A 40-hour week on 28,680 a year is 28,680 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = 13.79 an hour.
