Amount including tax
$120.00
What the total is made of
- Amount before tax$100.00
- Tax$20.00 (16.67%)
- Amount including tax$120.00
How this is calculated
VAT and GST are percentages added to a price. These are the formulas used:
- Tax added to an amount
- A × r ÷ 100
- Total including tax
- A + A × r ÷ 100
- Amount before tax, from a total
- T ÷ (1 + r ÷ 100)
- Tax inside a total
- T − T ÷ (1 + r ÷ 100)
A is the amount before tax, T is the amount including tax and r is the tax rate in percent.
To remove tax you divide; you do not subtract the percentage. With 20% tax, 120 contains 20 of tax, not 24, because the 20% applies to the price before tax (100), not to the total (120).
Amounts are rounded to 2 decimal places. The tax is rounded first, so the amount before tax plus the tax always equals the total shown. Invoices and tax returns can follow different rounding rules, so check the rules where you file.
Fiscora does not fill in a rate for you. Rates differ by country and by product and can change, so enter the rate from your tax authority or accountant.
Worked example
Adding 20% tax to $100.00 gives $20.00 of tax and a total of $120.00. Going the other way, a price of $120.00 that already includes 20% tax contains $20.00 of tax and $100.00 before tax.
VAT and GST questions
How do I add VAT or GST to a price?
Multiply the price by the rate ÷ 100 to get the tax, then add it to the price. For example, 100 with 20% tax: the tax is 20 and the total is 120.
How do I remove VAT or GST from a price that already includes it?
Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For 120 with 20% VAT included: 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 before tax, so the tax is 20. Do not subtract 20% of 120 (which is 24): that gives the wrong answer.
What is the difference between VAT and GST?
They work in almost the same way: a tax added to the price of goods and services. VAT is the term used in the UK, the EU and many other countries; GST is used in countries such as India, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore. This calculator works for both, just enter your rate.
Which tax rate should I enter?
The rate that applies to your goods or services in your country, as set by your tax authority. Rates differ by country and product and can change, so Fiscora does not fill one in. Confirm it with your tax authority or accountant.
Is my information stored or sent anywhere?
