Return on investment (ROI)
50%
Net gain
$500.00
Annualized return
14.47%
- Invested$1,000.00
- Final value$1,500.00
How this is calculated
ROI compares what you gained with what you put in. These are the formulas used:
- Return on investment (ROI)
- (V − I) ÷ I × 100
- Annualized return
- ((V ÷ I)^(1 ÷ t) − 1) × 100
I is the amount invested, V is the final value and t is the time in years (months ÷ 12).
The annualized return is the steady yearly growth rate that would turn I into V over t years, with compounding.
ROI ignores risk, taxes and fees unless you include them in the numbers. It also does not show how long your money was tied up, which is why the annualized return helps when you compare investments held for different lengths of time.
Worked example
An investment of $10,000.00 that grows to $25,000.00 over 5 years has an ROI of 150%, a net gain of $15,000.00. That is an annualized return of 20.11%.
ROI questions
How do you calculate ROI?
ROI = (final value − amount invested) ÷ amount invested × 100. For example, investing 1000 and ending with 1500 gives a gain of 500 and an ROI of 50%.
What is annualized ROI and why does it matter?
Annualized ROI is the yearly growth rate that would give the same result over the time you held the investment. It lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time: 50% over 3 years is about 14.5% a year, while 50% over 1 year is 50% a year.
Can ROI be negative?
Yes. If the final value is lower than the amount invested, ROI is negative and the investment lost money. An ROI of −100% means the whole amount was lost.
Does ROI include fees and taxes?
Only if you include them. For a more realistic result, subtract fees and taxes from the final value, or add them to the amount invested, before you calculate.
